We, the undersigned, urge the state of New Mexico to take action to implement new statewide spay-neuter funding mechanisms to decrease companion animal overpopulation, a statewide problem that results in approximately 135,000 cats and dogs entering New Mexico animal shelters every year—and almost half are euthanized, simply for lack of adoptive homes.
Because this problem is greatest in counties that lack affordable and accessible spay/neuter resources, the expansion of low-cost spay/neuter resources in New Mexico will reduce the number of homeless animals entering shelters, decrease animal suffering, protect public health and safety, and conserve the millions of taxpayer dollars spent on animal control and euthanasia.
To increase funding for low-cost spay/neuter services throughout the state, we support legislation enacting an annual fee to be paid by large pet food manufacturers who sell dog and cat food and treat products in New Mexico.

* Contact both of your legislators and ask them for their support of this desperately needed, life-saving measure. House Bill 123 which was originally introduced in 2017 but was vetoed.
IMPORTANT: 2018 State Legislative Session begins January 16 and ends February 15. That provides just 30 days to pass legislation and enact fiscal policy measures. This is a “short” session but vetoed bills in the last session can be reintroduced in 2018 session.
