Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary Thrift Store NEEDS YOUR HELP!

As you begin your spring cleaning, please keep our Thrift Store in mind. We are in need of donations of all kinds such as furniture, kitchen and bathroom accessories, lamps, pottery, clothing, books, shoes, pans, and anything else you might have that is “gently used”.

For large items, please call the store to arrange pick up. For all other items, please take them at our store at

The revenue from our store goes towards the operation of our animal sanctuary and we thank you in advance for your support.

Volunteers needed at ASCMV

The Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley (ASCMV) is in need of volunteers to help out with the many animals awaiting their forever homes. Anyone who is at least 18 years old or 12-17 years with a parent or guardian present can volunteer. Applications are available at the ASCMV, located at 3551 Bataan Memorial West.

Volunteers will have to attend an orientation and may help out in the following areas:

*     Dog-Walker
Take a select group of dogs and puppies to designated areas of the facility to provide exercise and socialization. Must be patient and attentive, commit to using proper and approved handling techniques, as trained by staff. Requires a high level of physical activity, walks last approximately 15 to 30 minutes each.

*     Off-site Adoption Event Assistant
Work with staff to set-up off-site adoption events and assist with handling and caring for our adoptable animals. Dates, locations, and times vary, but off-site adoption events generally occur on Saturdays. Volunteers must be able to arrange for transportation to such events.

*     Humane Education/Community Outreach
Conduct educational presentations at schools, churches, clubs, and other organizations about pet ownership responsibilities, preventing animal abuse, and combating pet overpopulation. Dates, locations, and times will vary.                                                

*     Fundraising/Marketing and Special Events
Provide assistance to staff in soliciting donations and sponsorships from the business community. Take ASCMV literature and event flyers to businesses throughout the community.

*     Office Assistance
Supplement our shelter with greeting the public, putting together adoption packets, making copies, and more.

*     Adoption Counseling
Assist staff in finding life-long, responsible homes for our companion animals.

*     Animal Care Assistant
Provide direct care to dogs and cats, including feeding, watering, cleaning cages, and washing food and water dishes.

*     Photography Team
Take pictures of our adoptable animals to be used on the shelter website, local newspapers, and other printed materials. Photographers are welcome to use their own digital camera.

*     Transport Assistance
Transport cages and crates to and from our off-site adoption locations. Must be able and willing to use own vehicle have a valid New Mexico driver’s license.

*     Foster Home Program
Provide care at home for very young animals, nursing mothers with litters, and/or adult animals recovering from illness or injury. This position requires an additional application approval and interview.

PUPPY & BASIC OBEDIENCE CLASSES

The Dog Obedience Club of Las Cruces, Inc. has been offering dog training classes in Las Cruces since 1971. Currently we’re offering a 6 week course in puppy and basic obedience.

Classes will be taught at Hermosa Heights Park, (a.k.a. the dog park) a small fenced park across from Hermosa Heights Elementary School .

DOCLC’s training methods use positive reinforcement and praise rather than harsh corrections. Our goals are to help you and your dog become an effective obedience team and to teach your dog to be a better family member.

DISCOUNTS for returning DOCLC students, spayed or neutered dogs, and dogs adopted from the Doña Ana County Humane Society, or other recognized rescue organization.

Bow Wow and Meow Bowls benefits DACHS

The public is invited to explore their artistic side and benefit animals by purchasing and decorating their own pet dishes at Ceramics Plus, 901 S. Main Suite 1 in Las Cruces.  A portion of the purchase of each dish will be donated to the Dona Ana County Humane Society (DACHS).  

Dishes cost $13, $15 and $17 each, depending on selection.  Purchasers are provided materials to decorate their dishes, and they are then glazed and finished at the store.

DACHS administers programs that benefit animals in the county, including  the Animal Relief Fund, which helps low-income people pay their pets’ emergency veterinary bills; and the Pets for the Senior Program, which provides vouchers good for $50 off the adoption fee for pets from Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley (people age 60 and over)

Ceramics Plus is open from 10am to 6pm Mondays and Tuesdays; 10am to 8pm Wednesdays and Thursdays; and 10am to 6pm Fridays and Saturdays.
