Cruces Canines: Howling Halloween
"Howling Halloween" Event @ Andele's Dog House - Thursday, October 2nd @5:30 p.m.
"Cruces Canines", a people and pet social held at Andeles Dog House (1983 Calle del Norte in Old Mesilla), is Thursday, October 2nd from 5:30-8:00 p.m. People are invited to attend with their well-behaved, leashed dogs for a fun time socializing with animal friends. Admission is $5.00 with proceeds going to the Humane Society of Southern NM to support services helping animals. Radio host Amanda Lopez Askin with "Wednesdays, Let's Talk Las Cruces" KGRT AM Classic Country will serve as emcee.
The event theme is "Howling Halloween." Dog owners are invited to dress up their pet (optional) in a costume or with an accessory item to reflect the theme. Ribbons will be awarded for different categories. Door prizes will be part of the event with opportunity to bid on jewelry, art items, & collectibles. 2nd Annual Dollars for Dogs & Coins for Cats
September 27th from 10am-4pm
Supporters of ACTion Programs For Animals (APA) are gathering together for a unique shopping/adoption event called Dollars for Dogs and Coins for Cats, hosted at 1915 Burke Rd. in Las Cruces, on Sept. 27th. This is the 2nd annual event, and it gives the opportunity to shop for items from vendors such as The Pampered Chef, Jamberry Nails, Scentsy, Avon, and Premier Designs while also visiting with some of APA's dogs and cats up for adoption. The shopping is available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and animals will be there for adoption from 10 a.m. to about 1 p.m.
Proceeds from the event are donated to APA for their Dona Ana Pets Alive! campaign. Since May 2012, the group has rescued more than 1150 animals as part of this No Kill campaign, most from the municipal shelter. This is not possible without local support for events such as these.

Cruisin' for Critters
5th Annual Charity Run
Cruisin' for Critters, Saturday October 4th, 2014, sign in is at 10:30am-12noon at Las Cruces MotorSports located at 2125 S. Valley.
There will be door prizes, raffle items, silent auction. $15 per rider benefits ACTion Programs for Animals. After party information to be announced. Riders under 21 will not be admitted into the bar but will receive a meal gift certificate and are eligible for grand prizes.

Safe Haven's Events
October 2nd, 5th and 12th
Grand Opening Event: Safe Haven Thrift Store has expanded into adjoining space. They now have a furniture and appliance department to complement their existing treasures that can be found there. Sales from the store go to support the cats and dogs awaiting adoption at the Sanctuary. Grand Opening is Thursday, October 2nd 3:30-5:30pm with a ribbon cutting at 4pm. Spectacular specials will run all day and there will be a shopping spree drawing every 2 hrs.
Dog Wash: Safe Haven will be holding a Dog Wash on Sunday, October 5th from 11am-4pm at the new Better Life Pet Foods location, 315 N. Telshor Blvd. (in front of Home Depot). Mesquite Animal Vaccination Clinic will also be on hand to offer rabies vaccinations and there will also be a nail trimmer available. Prices are $15 for the dog wash and $5 for a nail trim. This event is a fundraiser for the pets at Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary which is a “no kill” shelter and adoption center for cats and dogs and a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. Open House/Adoption Event: On Sunday, October 12th Safe Haven will host their Annual Open House & Adoption Event. This will be held at the Sanctuary from 12pm-4pm. This is a time when they get to show off their unique establishment to the public. Hot food and refreshments will be served and tours of the facility will be offered. There are some 80 healthy pets awaiting adoption. 6890 Eagle Road. Take Hwy. 70 east to Holman Road, then north to El Centro and right and follow the signs.

Pits for Peace Walk
3rd Annual Pits for Peace Walk
PITS for Peace Walk event is on October 25th (11am-3pm) at Young Park in the bandstand area. It is in celebration of Pit Bull Awareness Day as well as a celebration of the loving nature of all dogs, and all who are leashed and well-behaved are welcome.
Walk starts at 1pm. First 100 registrants get a FREE totebag. There will be food vendors, raffles, live music, pet adoptions.

ASCMV Off-Site Pet Adoption Events and Volunteer Opportunities
Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley staff and volunteers will facilitate dog, cat, puppy and kitten adoptions this Saturday, September 27th. In addition to adoptions from the shelter site, adoptions also will take place at two off-site pet adoption events.
- From 8:30 a.m. to noon, adoptions will take place at the Farmer’s Market in downtown Las Cruces. Dogs available for adoption will be located at the north end of the mall. Cats can be adopted from the offices of the Center for Spiritual Living at the north end of the mall, across from the site where the dog adoptions take place.
- From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., adoptions also will be facilitated at PetCo, 3050 E. Lohman, also in Las Cruces.
Adoption fees are $75 for dogs/ puppies and $50 for cats/kittens. The fee includes the first set of vaccinations, spay/neuter and microchip.
At the PetCo event, microchipping for pets that already have homes will be available to the public for $20, and city pet licenses will be available to neutered pets for $5 each. Licenses for unneutered pets are $25 each. Proof of spay/neuter is required before a $5 license will be issued. Pet owners also must bring current proof of rabies vaccination for each animal to be licensed.
The Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley also offers low-cost spay/neuter operations at the rate of $35 for dogs and $25 for cats. Appointments can be scheduled by calling the shelter offices.
- Dedicated transport drivers who are able to handle rambunctious adult dogs and puppies are needed for transport services on Saturday mornings in conjunction with off-site adoption initiatives. Volunteers must be 18 or older with valid registration, driver’s license and insurance. An application form can be obtained by contacting the shelter’s volunteer coordinator at
. To be considered, you must be able to handle large, rambunctious dogs and playful puppies. Training courses will be provided to selected applicants. Orientation and training provided and required prior to volunteering with ASCMV.
- Volunteers are also needed to assist with animal care and socializing, as well as helping to facilitate cat adoptions on Saturdays at the Farmer’s Market. To apply, contact
